CHALLENGES OF AN ATHLETE

1998 saw the beginning of my professional career. With inspiration from my friends Alan Baxter and Lesley McKenna and compliments on my riding from spectators, Achieving 2nd in the Scottish Championship Boardercross, winning all the other races (including the instructor’s race) secured me a clothing sponsorship with the Rip Zone Company. I also participated in a free training day hosted on my local resort, the Cairngorms Mountains with Mark Bishop, one of the highest qualified Snowboard Instructors in the UK. Bruce Crawford from Snowsport Scotland was present at this event and I took the opportunity to ask for guidance, assistance and enquire about funding opportunities. I also promoted my determination to advance my professional career.

Following on my next season, which began in approximately November 1999. I spent considerable time and effort developing a portfolio outlining my professional achievements, actively sought sponsorship and began a strict training schedule with the assistance of Alan Baxter. Tony Brown of Ice Publishing offered his assistance by professionally designing the front cover for my portfolio. It was through a chance meeting with former Ski racer Dave Smith that I was informed of my selection for the Scottish squad and gave me a copy of a letter he had received from Snowsport Scotland. It was disheartening that they failed to notify me personally. more>
