Steven Trolland
British Snowboard ChampionDespite efforts to receive guidance and direction from the various Snowsport organisations, none were forthcoming. However, Lesley McKenna, having had similar difficulties gaining assistance from Snowsport organisations, also proved invaluable help in planning and developing my portfolio. Upon completion I sent the portfolio plus a request for financial assistance to all the local companies in Aviemore. Bruce Crawford from Snowsport Scotland also received this but when I finally made contact after numerous attempts I received no financial assistance. I made my way to the Three Valleys, Courchevel after receiving sponsorship
of £250.00 from the Old Bridge Inn, a board from Rossignol and
an offer of accommodation from friends. I tried to enter every race
possible to raise my profile. However, my first week proved exceptionally
difficult in terms of having to hitchhike lifts or walk up and down
the mountain, handing round my CV’s and portfolio and found
employment as a kitchen porter working 17 hour shifts etc., thus giving
me little time to practice or train. This, as well as having had a
bad starting number, a rutted course with everyone else having gone
down, affected my performance in my first major competition, the Swatch
World Cup in Meribel. Frustrated, I had no option but to ask my works
Manager to change to night shift to enable me more time on the snow
for training and also the chance to have, on occasion, three to four
hours sleep and some times none at all. I frequently had to contact
and place a tremendous burden on my parents for financial support.
Eventually I received further sponsorship of £500 from David
Cameron, Upland Developments. more> Stevens Diary
